Princess Meriel and her five brothers are surprised when their father, the king, comes home from a trip with a new wife. Seeing as the queen died long ago, it seems reasonable, they decide. But the new queen drives the six children crazy with her new rules. When Meriel’s brothers disappear, she finds that the evil queen has transformed them into swans. The only way to save them is for Meriel to sew five shirts out of stinging nettles, without saying a word the entire time. Even with help from Riona and Liam, Meriel’s new-found friends, can she sew them all before the swans fly south?

What I like about this story is that it’s a fairy tale, not a “twist” on a fairy tale. The author just lengthens it and adds more character depth. I found it fun to read, and I couldn’t stop until I finished the whole thing.

Princess of the Wild Swans, by Diane Zahler. 212 pages. Copyright 2012. The same author has written the books The Thirteenth Princess and A True Princess. I haven’t read them,  but I might in the future.
